NEW TEACHER CENTER-WISCONSIN STAFF
Resonating at the core of the Wisconsin and Dane County New Teacher Projects is the voice of the classroom teacher. Our staff and each of the trainers are grounded in quality professional development. More importantly, we know as lifelong educators that the best training comes from those who use the tools and strategies of quality mentoring in actual practice, a crucial qualification held by the Director and the Coordinator as well as all trainers.
Mrs. Nelson is the Program Director of the New Teacher Center - Wisconsin (NTP-WI) and Midwest Regional Director for the New Teacher Center (NTC). Her experience as an educator includes 24 years as a high school science teacher, a year as the Teacher in Residence at the US Department of Education with Secretaries of Education Riley and Paige, and much work at the local, state, and national level regarding science education, teacher leadership and advocacy. Sharon’s induction work in Wisconsin includes: the Dane County New Teacher Project, a consortium of 15 school districts working together since 2002; the Southeast Wisconsin New Teacher Project, a consortium of 10 school districts that began in 2006; eight districts in the River Falls area; and five school districts in the Kimberly, WI, area, as well as other interested districts and agencies in the state. The NTC/WNTP partners with the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators for principal support in working with beginning teachers, with University of Wisconsin-Madison and Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee on mentor certificates, and others in the state on policy and advocacy issues.
