• Background •
The New Teacher Center (NTC) is nationally known for its work in
teacher and principal induction, and in professional development for educators
across a broad spectrum of roles and experience. Building an extensive repertoire of resources,
NTC delivers professional
development for school leaders around the goal of ensuring that all students
experience powerful teaching and learning.
Because NTC has worked with
hundreds of school districts and thousands of principals and teachers throughout
the nation—including in Wisconsin through the New Teacher Center – Wisconsin -
it has solid evidence that its work has had significant positive impact on
school leaders and their work.
• Content •
Principals
play a critical role in teacher development, yet they sometimes have received
little preparation in the kinds of supervision and observation that might
further teacher growth. Some traditional
models of teacher supervision are not designed to support teacher
learning. This professional development
supports principals in identifying beginning teacher developmental needs and
determining effective strategies to help new teachers to thrive, not just
survive.
• Professional Development Objectives •
·
Understand the role of the
principal in high-quality teacher induction models
·
Understand the professional
context of beginning teachers and their effectiveness
·
Identify the site policies,
structures, and procedures that principals can implement on behalf of beginning
teachers
·
Develop guidelines for mentor-principal
relationships and communications
·
Consider the role of formative
assessment in teacher induction and its relationship to supervision
·
Assess current practices and set
next steps
• Intended Audience •
This professional
development is particularly appropriate for Site Administrators – Principals
and Assistant Principals –as well as other administrators who are responsible
for teacher observation and supervision.
Districts are encouraged to send teams of principals/assistant
principals so they can carry the information back to their districts and share
with others.
